Week 1- Practice Photo Blog - Anna Krasin

Hello! My name is Anna Krasin. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Education and am working as a Kindergarten Paraprofessional. Last year, I was a long-term substitute teacher and I made the yearbook! Here is my picture! Naturally, I sent a photo to all my family members!
Prior to working as a full-time employee, I was a substitute teacher in the LPS district for close to 2 years. My husband and I have two elementary age daughters and a new puppy!

This year, I am a Kindergarten Paraprofessional and am completing my practicum while working in the classroom. We have 22 Kindergarteners, ages 5 and 6. More than half of the students went to preschool and arrived knowing their letters and numbers. Lessons are planned for students who need extensions and for those who need additional support. We have one student who is visually impaired, one student who uses a wheelchair and a communication device, and another student who has an IEP for a developmental disorder. The majority of our students come from middle-class, English speaking families.

The teacher I work with has been teaching for 29 years and is a Kindergarten expert! She has a great understanding of how Kindergarteners learn, think, and play. She is always kind and positive, and finds ways for her students to feel and be successful!

Why do I want to be a teacher?

After serving multiple long-term substitute positions, I had the privilege of seeing many lightbulb moments and moments of academic and social-emotional growth. While my experiences had their challenges, I found the whole endeavor worthwhile. I enjoy being a part of a professional community of educators who challenge and support me and who hold high expectations for excellence. I enjoy being in-service to my community and being a facilitator of knowledge as students learn new ideas and build upon prior knowledge.

My goals

The areas I will work on during this course are how to best apply standards when lesson planning, lesson planning in itself, especially when considering special needs or culturally diverse students,  and how theory, or the science of learning, drives curriculum and teaching methods. Though I have created lesson plans in the past, I did not know how to directly relate them to standards or how to be mindful for students and their diverse needs.

  1. Anna, it's amazing that you have such an experienced mentor teacher.
I understand the "lightbulb moment" reasoning for becoming a teacher - that is one of the reasons that I want to become a teacher also.

I love that you’ve already had so many “lightbulb moments” in your career—those are truly what make teaching so fulfilling. Your goals for the course are fantastic and will undoubtedly help you grow as an educator. The focus on incorporating standards into lesson planning and being mindful of diverse needs shows how thoughtful and student-centered you are.

Learning about Alaska

Alaska 'There are 48 states that are close together and 2 that are far away. Today we are going to learn about Alaska, one of the states that is further away.' - Kindergarten Mentor Teacher In Kindergarten, there is a real art to simplifying ideas and concepts for 5 and 6 year olds and I wanted to showcase how well my mentor teacher makes learning accessible to her students.  This past week, Kindergarteners began learning about Alaska and what makes it a unique place to live.  Topics we covered: - Alaska's culture - History including the Inuit people - Animals - Things to do - Nature The lesson began by building students knowledge around the geographical locations of Colorado, Alaska and Hawaii. Together, the teacher and students colored and labeled each state. Kopp wrote ' Note taking may begin in kindergarten with the recording and posting of information on anchor charts, drawing paper, and personal learning journals' (Kopp, 2017, p. 77). This lesson is a perfect...
SmartLab  Cobly-the Code & Go Robot Dr. John Spencer created a Design for Thinking Cycle with his colleague AJ Juliani as a way to describe the process of product development. The Kindergarteners spent two days in SmartLab, their monthly  STEM lab time, this past week and had a chance to learn about Colby, a code and go robot mouse. I saw Dr. John Spencer’s Hands-on and Minds-on Learning, and more specifically, his Launch Cycle framework play-out as the SmartLab teacher introduced the activity to the students. Here is what I witnessed: L- Look, Listen, and Learn In the phase, the students watched, listened and learned about the robot kit and how to use each piece. The kit consists of interlocking green track squares, command cards (that tell Colby what to do), a magnet block of cheese (the end goal), Colby and all its buttons, and some fun orange arches to incorporate (a fun design element).  The teacher demonstrated how you create a plan with the command cards, wipe ...
